Document verification
Document verification is the process of checking whether an identity document, such as a passport or driver’s license, is genuine, valid and belongs to the person presenting it.
Document verification is a core identity-verification method used when a person submits a government-issued identity document during account opening, onboarding or access checks. It can be performed by trained reviewers, automated software or a combination of both.
The process usually examines the document’s image, data and security features, then compares document details with other evidence, such as a selfie, database record or electronic chip.
What document verification checks
- Document authenticity, including signs of alteration, forgery, screen replay or a copied image.
- Document validity, such as expiry date, issuing jurisdiction and whether the document type is accepted.
- Data consistency, including whether the machine-readable zone, barcode or chip data matches the visible document fields.
- Portrait similarity when paired with biometric verification, typically by comparing the document photo with a live selfie or video.
- Evidence of possession, often through liveness checks designed to show that a real person is present rather than using a static image or recording.
Common methods
Automated systems use optical character recognition to read printed fields and may inspect image patterns, fonts, holograms, ultraviolet features where available, barcodes and near-field communication chips. Near-field communication, or NFC, is the short-range wireless technology used to read chips in many modern passports and some national identity cards.
A document check alone does not necessarily establish that the presenter is the document holder. For higher-risk uses, organizations commonly combine it with selfie matching, liveness detection, device and fraud signals, or verification against authoritative data sources.
Limits and regulatory context
Document verification can fail when images are poor, documents are damaged, supported document coverage is limited, or fraudsters use sophisticated counterfeit or manipulated documents. Results should be treated as one component of a risk-based identity decision, not as a guarantee of identity.
In the United States, document checks are widely used for customer identification and fraud prevention, including in financial services. In the European Union, their use must also account for data-protection obligations under the General Data Protection Regulation, particularly because document images and biometric data can be sensitive personal data.
